Abstract

The mammalian cerebral cortex is characterized by a radial organization which derives from the radial neuronal architectonics of the embryonic cortical plate. This normal cell pattern of the embryonic cortex is necessary for the development of cortical lamination and foliation as well as columnar organization. The purpose of this work is to show that radial organization of the embryonic cortical plate is: (1) the result of a progressive build-up during brain evolution and (2) under genetic control, particularly from the reeler locus (in mice).
