The Effect of Ouabain on Intracellular Ion Activities, Membrane Resistances, and Sodium-Coupled Transport Processes

Ion Measurements in Physiology and Medicine

Abstract

The aim of this study was to elucidate the events following the inhibition of Na+/K+-ATPase in renal cells. The study was performed in proximal tubules of the frog kidney. As illustrated in Fig. 1, Na+/K+-ATPase activity in these cells not only governs Naj and Ki? but indirectly influences pHj, Cai? and Cli, as well as the sodium-dependent hydrogen ion secretion rNa/H and transport of organic substrates (e.g., T G, T Phe). Thus, inhibition of Na+/K+-ATPase may be expected to produce a profound disturbance of the cellular electrolyte homeostasis and transport function.
