Abstract
The transport of sodium in “leaky” epithelia is an active process, dependent on the metabolism of the cells and inhibited by the selective blockade of the Na pump. It is not yet established, however, what the contribution of the transcellular fluxes is to the net transepithelial transport of salt. The experiments reported here, were aimed at studying the Na pump and its role in the transepithelial transport of sodium in a typical low resistance epithelium: the gallbladder epithelium of Necturus.
