Abstract
We have investigated the cellular mechanism(s) of the inotropic effects in mammalian heart muscle of the 1,4-dihydropyridine compounds, nitrendipine and Bay k 8644. Our primary tool in this work has been the Ca2+-sensitive photoprotein, aequorin (see Blinks et al. 1982), which we have used to observe the changes in cytoplasmic free [Ca2+) that accompany the twitch contraction of mammalian ventricular muscle.
