Exclusion of Large Fish and Birds
- 96 Downloads
The tidal flat ecotone is frequented by foraging birds and fish. Most of them prey on large invertebrates dwelling in the sediment, while some others feed on algae and seagrasses. Both groups can be kept away from small areas of tidal flats by setting up cages with a wide-meshed netting. Below I describe the results of such exclusion experiments from the tidal flats of Königshafen on the island of Sylt, followed by a general discussion on the role of large fish and birds in the tidal flat community.
