Abstract
Hypotheses and generalizations put forward by ecologists are tacitly biased by the kind of ecosystem they are best acquainted with. This is probably inevitable. In this chapter I disclose my personal background: the tidal flats of Königshafen, a sheltered bay on the island of Sylt in the eastern part of the North Sea (Fig. 5.1). I have seen (and read about) other tidal flats in the world, but the experiments described in Chapters 7 to 11 were all done in this area. The reader is invited to trace the limitations in my ecological outlook back to the peculiarities of this environment and its organisms.
