Abstract

The history and the development of HLA-ology over the past 35 years can be roughly classified into four stages, as shown in Table 1. The fourth stage, from 1981 up to date, may be called one of revision. After the Ninth International Histocompatibility Workshop [1], biochemical and molecular genetic analyses of the genes and gene products associated with the class II D region revealed the existence of at least three subregions, DR, DQ, and DP, each of which consists of a noncovalently associated α and β chain [10].
