Abstract
For more than a century developmental biologists have understood the importance of temporal order, or temporal organization, in biological systems. Events during embryogenesis must occur not only in the right position of the embryo but at the correct time and in the correct sequence. Cell biologists, too, have recognized the necessity of specific timing signals in the control of nuclear and cell division in the integrated sequence of events of the cell cycle.
