Lower Extremity Coverage

Abstract

A soft tissue defect of the lower extremity may be covered with many different types of free tissue transfers. These include cutaneous, muscle only, myocutaneous, and fascial transfers. Each of these has particular merit which recommends it to certain situations. In general, a free tissue transfer should not be used unless it provides advantages over other coverage techniques, such as split thickness skin grafts and local flaps. Free tissue transfers should be used only when these two techniques are not available, or there is a clear advantage to using a free tissue transfer.
