Abstract
Development of Intensive and Critical Care Units for Medical and Surgical patients for the last 15 years has led to an exponential use of intravascular catheters placed by relatively invasive techniques. It is obvious that “catheter related infection” is one of the sources of nosocomial infection. This type of infection, supervening on critical illness, may add greatly to the risk of death and the cost of hospitalisation.
