Summary

Using various non-invasive methods — electrocardiographic voltage measurements, echocardiogram, CO2-rebreathing, left apexcardiogram, carotidogram — cardiac structure and function were investigated before and after physical training in patients with ischaemic heart disease. Within the limits of the noninvasive methodology for cardiac evaluation and although the data were obtained in a non-controlled design, we suggest that endurance training of selected patients with ischaemic heart disease leads to an increased left ventricular wall thickness and an enhanced left ventricular function, mainly due to a decreased afterload.
