Summary

From 1981–1984 we operated 9 young sportsmen with strong pain at the tibial tuberosity under sporting or streneous activities. Cause of their pain was an Osgood-Schlatter disease. Although the Osgood-Schlatter disease usually heals spontaneously, these 9 sportsmen had their symptoms for many years and they had to avoid sporting activities.

The etiology of their pain was a traumatic separation of an unossified portion of the cartilagineous apophysis.

The ununited fragments in the patella tendon cause symptoms which may persist into adulthood.

A conservative treatment was not succesful by the affected young people. By operative treatment, that means by removing the avulsed fragments, the sportsmen were able to reparticipate on sporting activities.
