Zusammenfassung
Es wird eine Übersicht über den Stand der Entwicklung datenbankspezifischer Rechnerarchitekturen bei besonderer Berücksichtigung von Anwendungen im Bürobereich gegeben. Für drei Klassen von Architekturen wird diskutiert, welches Leistungsverhalten sie in verschiedenen Typen von Anwendungen haben. Ferner werden Firmware- und Hardwaremaßnahmen zur Systembeschleunigung miteinander verglichen. Nach einer Übersicht über den Leistungsstand von Peripheriespeichern werden Leistungsanforderungen und mögliche leistungsverbessernde Maßnahmen für Operationen auf wenig strukturierten Objekten, insbesondere Texten, behandelt.
Die Arbeit basiert zu wesentlichen Teilen auf der Tätigkeit des Autors im Projekt „Relationale Datenbankmaschine“ an der TU Braunschweig;
