Summary
Both local and generalized abnormalities in bone metabolism are detected by bone scintigraphy as early as possible. An increased uptake of 99mTc-phosphate in bone indicates an local increase in blood flow as well as in bone formation rate, but there is no fixed correlation between both values. Tumorous, inflammatory or degenerative bone lesions normally cause reactive enhenced formation of new bone. Inflammatory disease of bone and joints as well as adjunctive soft tissue affection can be differentiated by the multi-phase bone scintigraphy.
