Abstract
There is no doubt that modern Geodesy, to be understood as the discipline that studies the earth from a geometric point of view, is the offspring of the experimental method. This it shares with many other disciplines, which, like ours, have their origin in the 17th century, and are nourished equally by experimental investigation and by mathematical speculation.
