Abstract

CAPD is now applied in many specialized units as a treatment of first choice for uremic children. While this method has obvious advantages for pediatric patients that are detailed elsewhere in this symposium, such aspects as nutrition remain controversial. Dietary constraints are less severe for CAPD than for hemodialysis, and that could allow higher intakes and a better nutritional status. On the other hand, the ascites associated with CAPD could decrease appetite, and loss of protein from the peritoneum exerts a further negative influence on nutritional status. There are almost no data available on the dietary intake of children on CAPD [1]. Therefore, the aim of this study is to determine the dietary intake in such patients by means of dietary surveys.
