Abstract

Plant mitochondria are small organelles of the cytoplasmic compartment of the cell, involved in respiration and providing energy (ATP) and metabolic precursors for the rest of the cell. The mitochondria consist of a folded inner membrane involved in different processes (electron transport, metabolite transports via selective carriers, ATP synthesis, etc.) surrounding a matrix space containing all the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle enzymes as well as a genetic system (DNA, RNA and ribosomes) for protein synthesis. The inner membrane is protected from the cytosol by an outer limiting membrane, the role of which remains uncertain. However the presence of b-type cytochrome (DOUCE et al. 1973), porine (Zalman et al. 1980) and hexokinase (Tanner et al. 1983) demonstrates that the external membrane must perform several specific functions as well as a mechanical role. In addition, little is known about the presence of soluble enzymes in the intermembrane space and their possible functions.
