Abstract

The most representative W, Cu-U-V, Pb-Zn and barite strata-bound deposits of Argentina are outlined.

There are numerous scheelite strata-bound deposits in the Precambrian in Sierras Pampeanas of Cordoba and San Luis provinces, in calc-silicate rocks associated with limestones and amphibolites. Also, a copper occurrence in limestones is known in the Precambrian of Córdoba.

The important Pb-Zn Aguilar deposit in Jujuy province is in Lower Paleozoic sediments that have been partially changed by metamorphism because of the action of a Cretaceous granite. The La Helvecia Pb-Zn barite deposit in La Rioja province and the barite deposits in the north of Mendoza province are also found in Paleozoic sediments. The considerable uraniferous Sierra Pintada District in Mendoza province is placed in Upper Paleozoic continental sandstones.

Wide basins showing diverse mineralizations are known in the Mesozoic: in Neuquen and Mendoza provinces in marine shelf environments with gypsum, barite, celestite, halite, and potash salts, and several U-Cu-V occurrences in continental sandstones. Uraniferous deposits are also found in continental sandstones in extra-Andean Patagonia, and in the northwest of Argentina several sedimentary basins holding interesting Cu, U, Pb, and Zn mineralizations are known.

Finally, there are some copper deposits in sandstones in the Cenozoic in the northwest of Argentina.
