Abstract
Understanding transcriptional control mechanisms is a major problem in molecular biology. Recent studies of the structure and function of a number of eukaryotic transcriptional units have brought to light several different controlling elements that play a part in the initiation of transcription by RNA polymerase II (Shenk 1981). One element with a number of surprising characteristics will be the focus of attention in this chapter. It is now commonly referred to as enhancer or activator.
