The Development of Joint Human and Veterinary Medical Laboratory Services

  • G. W. Beran
Conference paper

Only a few jointly operated human and veterinary medical laboratories exist in the world. Many more laboratories operated by helath or veterinary services do some examinations for other services. Rabies diagnostic examinations are among the most frequent, and most pertinent, interservice diagnostic activities.

The efficiencies and improvements in services, as well as the greater availability of information and coordination of control efforts which can be achieved by joint human and veterinary medical laboratories are many. Several examples will be discussed, including the Animal Health Laboratory in Veracruz, Mexico, the Provincial Central Laboratory in Dumaguete City, Philippines, and the regional laboratories planned in Jamaica. Rabies diagnostic services in these joint laboratories will be emphasized.
