Abstract

Doctor Roger Porter, a major force behind the antiepileptic drug development program in the United States, is eminently qualified to deal with the subject of clinical trials of new antiepileptic drugs (AEDs). Our collective experience with the clinical evaluation of new AEDs has increased appreciably in the last 10 years. At least eight new chemical entities have reached the clinical phase of development. Problems in clinical development of AEDs are associated with patient selection, drug interactions, study design, and statistical analysis, as well as safety and efficacy evaluation.
