Abstract
Dementia can arise at any age. Rare before middle life, when its onset constitutes a personal tragedy for the sufferer and his/her immediate family, it is most commonly found among the very old, where the syndrome and its consequent deficits must be differentiated from those, often similar in form, produced by the ageing process.
