Abstract

Investigations of the distribution of cerebrovascular disease in different parts of the world have provided important information useful in formulating etiologic hypotheses. In any epidemiologic investigation, it is essential to define the disease being studied. The various terms included in this category of cerebrovascular disease are outlined in Table 1, together with corresponding code numbers from the World Health Organizations’s International Classification of Diseases [1]. In most epidemiologic studies the categories of cerebral thrombosis and cerebral embolism are combined into a single group referred to as cerebral infarction.
