Abstract
Synoptic keys for the identification of zygomycetous (vesicular-arbuscular) mycorrhizal fungi have been published by TRAPPE (1982). These include the genera of Endogonaceae, the genera that have affinity with or may be mistaken for Endogonaceae (Acaulospora, Complexipes, Endogone, Eutrophospora, Gigaspora, Glaziella, Glomus, Modicella, Sclerocystis). Moreover keys for the species of the genera known to include mycorrhiza formers are presented (Acaulospora, Gigaspora, Glomus, Sclerocystis. The synoptic key offers an alternative to dichotomous keys, because it can be expanded, corrected and new characteristics valuable for species identification can be added without rewriting. This is of advantage because of the proliferation of new species publications (Outlook: 200 species in 1990). Morphological structures are used to identify the VA-fungi, the basis for the taxonomy is formed by the soil-borne resting spores. The spores of Acaulospora, Eutrophospora and Gigaspora have been termed azygospores, the spores of Glaziella, Glomus and Sclerocystis are regarded as chlamydospores.
