Abstract

Multilateral studies and analysis of vegetation and plant communities continue to encompass the majority of actual sociological geobotany. They culminate often in comprehensive vegetation mapping or in inductive investigations on successions and on other syndynamical connections, including experimental approaches. All these studies and their results generate the basis of ever-increasing interconnections of vegetation research and sociological geobotany with other fields of theoretical and applied sciences. Among the structural features and the social interrelations in vegetation, the biocoenotic connections between plant communities and animals recently became more and more emphasized (e.g., FURTADO and MORI 1982, HOFFMANN and THIELE 1982, AHMAD 1983, DENNO and McCLURE 1983, KINZELBACH 1983, STRONG 1983, LAZARE et al. 1984; examples of special contributions in sects. 3a,b). Such connections are also included in more general volumes on community interrelations (MOONEY and GODRON 1983, ANDERSON and KIKKAWA 1984; also GIGON 1983, SCHMIDT 1983a,b; on tropical rain forests: MEDINA et al. 1984, WHITMORE 1984, also COLEY 1983; on mangrove vegetation: KOSTERMANS and SASTROUTOMO 1982, TEAS 1983). Other new volumes consider numerical aspects (GAUCH 1983, GREIG-SMITH 1983), allelopathy (GRODZINSKY 1982, 1983, WALLER and CHOU 1982), long-term vegetation changes in arid western North America (ROGERS 1982) and applications in land use (ELLENBERG 1983). Condensed introductory texts have been presented by WALTER and BRECKLE (1983), KREEB (1983), DEMANGEOT (1984) and GODRON (1984). Additional books will be quoted in context with the related topics in the next sections.
