Systematics of the Pteridophytes

Abstract

By far the most important contribution to the systematics of the ferns and fern allies as a whole is by TRYON and TRYON (1982). It is an at-tempt at integrating the accumulated knowledge, with the addition of many new data and interpretations, and gives an extensive account of all pteridophyte families and genera as represented in tropical America with at least brief references to taxa confined to the Old World. Keys to families, genera, and in some cases also species are provided. The taxonomy and affinities of every major group are discussed. Much attention is given to cytotaxonomic data and — this is the major original contribution — to spore characters as observed by SEM technique. The abundant, mostly newly prepared and largely excellent illustrations make the work unique. The family system is modern, and many genera of doubtful validity are sunk in others-. Maps show the overall (American) distribution of many genera. A handbook that has no equal.
