Home Blood Pressure Measurement — A Useful Tool in the Management of High Blood Pressure?
Ideally, the preventive treatment of hypertension is initiated upon detection of increased blood pressure readings. This procedure is based on cross-sectional studies of normo- and hypertensive populations which identify high blood pressure as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease mortality and morbidity. The subsequent drug treatment of hypertension is usually coupled with adverse side-effects for the otherwise asymptomatic patient. Lack of compliance with therapeutic measures is hence a common problem for the attending physician. Excessive death rates have recently been reported in certain subgroups of a study in which risk factors, including high blood pressure, had been treated vigorously . High blood pressure is a symptom which may be caused by a multitude of mechanisms, including stress from life events and working conditions. Single case studies are necessary to study more closely factors governing the course of the disease in individuals.
