Abstract

Thirty years of epidemiological research into the contribution of social and environmental factors to morbidity and mortality from chronic respiratory disease have shown the difficulty of establishing consistent relationships. Cassei and co-workers [1] name as a reason for this difficulty the tendency of health effects research to investigate the network environment by isolating the effects of their components. This approach neglects the fact that the relationships of the components to each other vary and that the effect of the whole is greater than the effect of the sum of the known parts.
