Abstract
The population-based prospective or semi-prospective study appears to be the most reliable method for evaluating the importance of risk factors and etiological factors for the development of chronic disease in the paediatric age-group. In order to study the impact of social background factors, pre-, peri- and postnatal factors on the pattern of morbidity in children the prospective cohort-study of Northern Finland was initiated in 1965 (Rantakallio, 1969)
