Abstract
Without knowing enough about the “natural” history of coronary artery disease, the prevalence of risk factors, the utilization of diagnostic facilities and the influence on demand, the use of criteria for operation and cost-effectiveness ratios of various patient groups, one has to decide on capacity for CABG in a country like the Netherlands. In fact the Dutch government recently decided to limit the capacity for CABG to some 9,000 per year (population size 14 million) for the near future. In this situation more and better information is needed about factors as described above. We believe that it is important to generate information about known factors and to make reasonable “guesstimates” for the unknown, in order to be able to make better decisions in the future.
