Abstract

Maternal and child health has traditionally been a priority area in the work of individual countries and the World Health Organization and,with the declaration of ALMA ATA on primary health care in 1978, was drawn into sharp focus. Health is considered an integral part of social and economic development. Primary health care rests on eight elements of which policies on maternal and child health, nutrition, immunization, diarrheal disease prevention and related preventive strategies constitute a substantial core.
