Summary

Seventeen healthy male physical education students performed two forms of interval exercises. In one form (intensive method) the exercises were performed alternating 15 s of exercise with 60 s of rest. In the other form (extensive method) the exercises alternated 30 s of exercise with 30 s of rest. In both forms the participants ran through a circuit twice with a rest period of 10 minutes between. During exercise and recovery (1, 3, 5, 7 and 10 minutes after exercise) heart rate was registered by telemetry. Blood lactic acid was measured during rest intervals and recovery at the above mentioned time points. In order to evaluate the effective exercise load the number of repetitions at each obstacle was also registered.

The main results were as follows:

After the first completion of the circuit, both extensive and intensive exercises produced the same lactic acid concentration (8.8 mmol/l); after the second completion blood lactate was 10.1 and 9.9 mmol/l respectively.

Varying with the exercise intensity the maximal heart rates ranged from 140 to 172 for both forms of exercise. In the extensive exercise program the heart rate at the end of the 30 s rest intervals was between 125 and 160 beats/min, and in the intensive program between 101 and 140 after the 60 s rest intervals.

For both forms of circuit training, there was no significant correlation between heart rate and blood lactic acid concentration changes. In conclusion it appears difficult to provide advices for the exercise intensity during circuit training from heart rate.
