Summary
The results presented show that maximum physical stress produces considerable changes in the hormones that regulate the menstrual cycle. Significant increases (prolactin, Cortisol, DHEA, oestradiol, testosterone) as well as decreases (FSH) are induced. Evident discipline-specific differences in hormonal responses to physical stress have been established, which may be due to effects from training as well as from different forms of physical exercise stress (duration of stress period long or short/aerobic — anaerobic).
The specific variations in menstrual patterns for various disciplines can be explained by the different hormonal responses (prolactin).
