Summary

To investigate the sympatho-adrenal activity in endurance exercise at different intensities — as practised in competitive sports — 9 male physical education students performed three different endurance exercises at the threshold intensities determined from the following threshold concepts: anaerobic threshold of Wasserman (AT), individual anaerobic threshold (IAT) and the point of overproportional increase of respiratory minute volume VE compared with the CO2 release (CO2T). Exercise times were 100 min for AT (pre-set limit), 90 min für IAT and 25 min for CO2T (latter two times from subjective exhaustion limits). At CO2T the lactate concentration increased continuously up to 11 mmol/1. At the endurance work load AT the plasma catecholamines adrenaline and noradrenaline increased minimally only in the first part of the exercise and then remained constant till the end of the exercise. On the other hand, at IAT as well as at CO2T the catecholamines increased markedly to multiple concentrations compared with initial values. The increase in catecholamines continued to the end of the exercise. At IAT and CO2T the increase of adrenaline -compared with noradrenaline — was significantly higher than at AT. The response of the plasma catecholamines to these investigated endurance work loads of different intensities permits the conclusion, that in the case of AT the work load is suitable for regenerative training in competitive sports or leisure-time sports while exercise at IAT or CO2T represents considerable physical and mental stress and therefore should be considered carefully when used in training.
