Hemoglobin Oxygen Binding Characteristics of Erythrocytes of Different Ages and Their Importance for Endurance Trained Athletes

Summary

Erythrocytes of different ages can be separated by density centrifugation. There are marked age-dependent differences in oxygen binding. Hemoglobin-oxygen affinity increases with cell age, obviously caused by decreasing diphosphoglycerate concentration, while hemoglobin interaction is reduced. Comparing old and young erythrocytes yields differences in P50 of 6.2 Torr, and in “n„ values (50 SO2) of 0.4. The Bohr coefficient (Δlog PO2/ΔpH) for CO2 acidification is markedly reduced in young compared to old red cells. The adaptive changes in oxygen affinity in endurance trained athletes are partly caused by the lower erythrocyte age resulting from hemolysis and increased erythropoesis.
