Abstract

In recent years, there has been significant progress in interferon research. Among the subtypes of interferon, interferon gamma (IFN γ) has been the least well studied for many years but only recently, significant progress has been made also in this area. IFN γ is a prototype of two important classes of substances; of the lymphokines, and of the interferons. The genomic structure of IFN γ is now known, and it has been the first lymphokine defined by the DNA sequence. In the following, we wish to summarize the recent literature on IFN γ but for a better understanding of the subject we need to start with two short chapters on the interferons and lymphokines.
