Abstract
The development of integrated cooperative ecological research programmes on a national scale demands the use of major biotic divisions rather than political or administrative units as a basis to the organizational framework. Such a framework should bring together research on those ecosystems which share floristic, faunistic, climo-edaphic and dynamic characteristics and which are consequently subject to the same kinds of environmental problems. For this reason the National Programme for Environmental Sciences has followed the tradition initiated in the International Biological Programme in developing its activities within the major biomes of South Africa.
