Abstract

The concept of cranial bone mobility was proposed by Sutherland [1] during the time he was a student at the Kirksville College in 1898. Even though he had presented anatomical evidence to support this concept, for more than four decades little recognition was given his ideas until 1940, when the Academy of Applied Osteopathy offered its support. The formation of the Osteopathic Cranial Association took place in 1947. The Cranial Academy, an outgrowth of the previous organization, was formed in 1960. Its purpose was to teach the techniques and to study the mechanisms of cranial manipulative therapy [2].
