Antigen Report: HLA-B8

  • Conference paper

Abstract

The HLA-B8 antigen has been known since 1965 and its characteristics were summarized in 1980 [4]. Of all the class I antigens studied by Vasilov et al. [8] it has the most acidic isoelectric point. Healthy individuals carrying HLA-B8 (but not all of them) have particular features not found in non-B8 individuals. These concern the decrease of some peripheral blood cell subsets (lymphocytes or monocytes [3, 5]); their IgG secretion when stimulated with PWM [9]; and their response in vitro when cultured with PHA, or Con A [5], with allogeneic or autologous cells [7] or with wheat antigen [2]. However, these features are probably not due to the presence of HLA-B8 itself, but rather to a gene or a set of genes in linkage disequilibrium with HLA-B8 [3,5].
