Abstract

In the field of gastrointestinal radiology, most centers report decreasing numbers of examinations owing to the performance of endoscopic investigations by gastroenterologists. However, in the postoperative phase, the role of the GI radiologist remains unchallenged — or has even expanded because of improved possibilities for the diagnosis and treatment of postoperative complications. Before critical diagnostic pathways can be discussed a few definitions are needed: there are two periods to be considered:

  1. a)

The immediate postoperative phase, while the patient is still in hospital recovering from the operation.

  2. b)

The followup phase, which could be defined as the time period following discharge from the hospital.
