The majority of patients seen in high volume Emergency Rooms are non-appointed “walk-in” patients with a complex spectrum of nonserious and serious illness. If the patient is not obviously ill on initial presentation, it is frequently assumed that the patient’s problem is minor, and that the patient can wait to be evaluated and treated and he is prioritized after the more overtly ill or injured patients.
