Zusammenfassung
Das Prostatakarzinom ist in den westlichen Industrieländern wahrscheinlich die häufigste Krebsart bei Männern vorgeriickten Alters, wenn man von den — meist heilbaren — Hautneoplasien absieht. Auf der Liste der krebsbedingten Todesursachen bei Mannern steht dieser Tumor nach dem Bronchus- und evtl. dem Dickdarmkrebs an zweiter oder dritter Stelle. Aus unbekannten Gründen ist der klinisch manifeste Prostatakrebs in Japan und anderen östlichen Ländern sehr viel seltener als in den USA, obschon seine latente Form dort etwa gleich haufig gefunden wird. Weil sich die Krankheitsinzidenz bei japanischen Einwanderern an diejenige der USA angleicht, werden als Ursache Umweltfak- toren vermutet. Hormonale Besonderheiten wurden bei Prostatakarzinomkran- ken nicht nachgewiesen. 85% der Patienten sind bei der Diagnosestellung alter als 65 Jahre.
