Abstract
Membranes from a wide variety of materials have been used as dialysis or filtration membranes for medical purposes. This goes back as far as 1913, when Abel et al. [1] first demonstrated the feasibility of an artificial kidney by diffusively removing metabolites from animal blood by circulating the blood through cellulose tubing placed in saline. Also, the first human dialysis performed by Haas in 1923 [35] utilized diffusion as the transport mechanism of the artificial kidney.
