Hemodiafiltration

Abstract

Hemodialysis eliminates solutes from the body by predominantly diffusive mass transfer, while hemofiltration is based on convective mass transfer. Hemodiafiltration is a method of blood purification which combines aspects of hemodialysis and hemofiltration. Solute removal occurs by both diffusion and convection across a selectively permeable membrane. The driving force for diffusion is the difference in concentration of the permeating substances in the blood and in the dialysate. The driving force for convection is the pressure gradient across the membrane, resulting in transport of water and permeating solutes from the blood to the dialysate. The fluid removed by this procedure is replaced by a sterile and nonpyrogenic substitution fluid of appropriate composition.
