Abstract
Francis Sibson was born in 1814 near Maryport, in Cumberland, England. When he was 5 years old his family moved to Edinburgh, where, at the age of 14, he became a surgical apprentice and received his diploma from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh at the age of 17 1/2 years. From 1835 to 1848 he was Resident Surgeon and Apothecary to the Nottingham General Hospital, and it is in the last 2 years of this appointment, immediately following the discovery of ether and chloroform anaesthesia, that we are particularly interested.
