Scanning was started with the median sagittal section, and this was followed by a sequence of scans obtained to the left of the median sagittal plane at intervals of 1 cm. The selected section thickness was 12 mm. The eight sagittal sections obtained in this manner cover the whole of one-half of the head extending from the median line to the left external ear. Corresponding inversion-recovery images comprise the sections S1–S4; slice thickness was 11 mm. Figures 4.1 and 4.2 show the direction and position of all eight slices (S1–S8) with reference to the middle sections of the two orthogonal planes (HI 2, F1/F9). The lines in the original scans represent the idealized middle plane of each section.
