Zusammenfassung
Der Gebrauch des Terminus „infektiöse Endokarditis“ spiegelt die Tatsache wider, daß man nicht länger eine akute sowie eine subakute Form als getrennte Krankheitsbilder betrachten kann. Auch schließt das Erregerspektrum nicht mehr nur Bakterien ein. Die infektiöse Endokarditis erscheint heute wesentlich vielgestaltiger. Als Erreger kommen Bakterien, Rickettsien und Pilze (nur äußerst selten Viren oder Parasiten) in Betracht. Man findet hinsichtlich des Verlaufs vom chronischen bis zum hyperakuten Typ alle Übergänge. Dies läßt jeden Versuch, die infektiöse Endokarditis in zwei Verlaufsformen einzuteilen, scheitern. In Abhängigkeit von seiner Virulenz sowie der Abwehrlage des Wirtorganismus kann ein und derselbe Erreger eine akute oder subakute Endokarditis verursachen.
