Abstract

Three internal sources of stochasticity in polynucleotide replication are discussed together with a survey of experimental data. Replication is visualized as a multi-type branching process. In case of kinetic degeneracy — when the kinetic parameters are the same for all replicating elements — the replicating system can be analysed as a stochastic process which consists of simultaneous, but independent linear birth and death processes. Then, we were able to derive analytical expressions for the occurence of random selection in mathematical model systems. Some models are discrete, some continuous in time. Random selection may be described in terms of “sequential extinction times” which represent a special class of first passage times. Simple expressions are obtained also for the probabilities of gene fixation in asexually multiplying populations.
