Abstract
We consider here the transport of solutes and particularly of pollutants by water flowing downward through the unsaturated zone. Let z be a downward vertical coordinate, x and y coordinates in the horizontal plane, t the time, and C the concentration defined, for instance, as mass of solute per volume of solution. The aim of mathematical modeling of the transport phenomenon is to provide a conceptual framework and formulas, which predict C(x,y,z,t) for a given field and given flow conditions. The knowledge of the concentration distribution in space and time permits one to assess the pollution hazards in the unsaturated zone as well as the danger of contamination of the underlying aquifer.
