Abstract
The clinical examination of the larynx includes mirror laryngoscopy, which may be complemented by the use of the operating microscope to achieve a magnified view, which has proved to be especially valuable for indirect evaluation of superficial lesions of the vocal cords and can be furnished with stroboscopic equipment. Telescopic examination has in some departments entirely replaced the mirror examination. Palpation of the larynx and neck should not be forgotten. Especially for major lesions the radiographic examination adds important information about both vertical and deep tumour extension. The surface extension is best assessed by laryngography and the deep extension by computed tomography.
